At Discovery School we understand that a child's parents and family are the most important people in their life. Because of this, Discovery School is a family friendly environment that encourages parents to be involved in their child's learning environment. There are several ways for parents to be involved at Discovery School:

1.  Join the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)- Parents meet for a monthly coffee meeting to discuss school policy, improvements, fundraising, family support, special programming and other areas of interest to the school.
2.  Volunteer in the classroom- Volunteers are welcome to read to children, talk to children about their special talents or occupations, help with class projects, etc.
3.  You are welcome to come and have lunch with your child.
4.  Help with special events- Fall Festival, Thanksgiving Feast, Valentine Exchanges, Easter Egg Hunts, Water Day.
5. Attend School Family Celebrations- Holiday Bazaar/Auction, Spring Fling Picnic, Pre-K Spring Program and Graduation.

Discipline
Discovery School stresses a positive classroom atmosphere that:

  • sets guidelines
  • gives attention to positive behaviors
  • maintains high expectations for each child

It is Discovery School policy that no physical punishment be administered to a child in our care. Teachers encourage the development of self-control in children by using techniques such as redirection, modeling appropriate behavior, defining limitations and maintaining high expectations. Problem solving skills are taught, practiced and reinforced for conflict resolution. Staff are trained in Love and Logic guidance techniques.

Lunch/Snacks

Parents will provide the child's lunch and a non-staining drink (apple juice, milk, orange juice, lemonade, etc.). Daily snacks will be brought by parents on a rotating basis within each classroom. Suggestions for nutritious snacks will be available from your child's teacher.

Rest Period
Toddlers, two and three year olds have a quiet rest period that varies in length according to age. Soothing music is played for easy relaxation. Mats and mat covers are provided by the school.

Release/Emergency
Children are signed in and out at the classroom each morning. At the morning sign in you will note the telephone number where you can be reached that day and also the name of the person who will be picking up your child after school. We will release your child ONLY to the individuals authorized on the Parent Consent Form.   For your child's protection photo identification will be required from any person picking up for the first time.
